WINTER SOLSTICE -JEHANE'S TWELVE DAYS OF CHRISTMAS

Todays prompt for @jehane_ltd #jehanestwelvedays Winter Solstice. My parents live in the Orkney islands and the last time I visited them for Christmas pre pandemic.

Orkney is famous for being the home of a neolithic settlement. As my Dad was driving us we saw the sun go down on Maeshowe on the winter solstice. A magical experience.

Maeshowe is its world-famous monument for midwinter alignment.

In the weeks leading up to the winter solstice, the darkest time of the Orcadian year, the last rays of the setting sun shine through Maeshowe's entrance passage to pierce the darkness of the chambered cairn with a beam of sunlight.
